<image:caption>I created this artwork in honor of my mother who passed away with lung cancer from smoking cigarettes. Her name was Mickie. In 2004 I became a new mom, with the joy of giving birth for the first time. My joy was suddenly stifled as I suffered with my mom in her journey from her emotional roller coaster of pain from being diagnosed with lung cancer through the grueling chemotherapy, to the elation of being in remission to the final train ride to her death. The light at the end of the tunnel was my daughter. A happy sweet baby with eyes that sparkled blue, she gave my mom little glimpses of joy and hope that she would be able to see her grow into the beautiful young lady that she is, but sadly, that never happened. I am now on the road to recovery myself, I am still in the grief process of losing my mom. Creating a life for me and my daughter without a mom... and without her grandma is difficult. Part of my recovery is helping to show through my art the damage cigarette smoking does to your lungs, to your heart, to your life and to your loved ones who continue to grief. Through agonizing visits with mom and seeing her suffer, wanting to help more but all I could do is love the most I can, while she was still here. And I tried to experience a closeness, when she was still here. Agonizing through her chemotherapy as I watched her body deteriorate in front of me and my heart still feels the pain, and the sorrow and the anger to see a life wasted...because of a smelly dirty, disgusting thing my mom should have quit, but she couldn't, and then she didn't. Until she finally stopped smoking, because she simply...couldn't breathe...anymore... I miss you Mom ~ I love you I ope this artwork, that I have created, with your inspiration and in your memory, helps many people to quit Smoking and quit Choking. Then I know that your life and then your death would have saved someone else's life by influencing them not to pick up again.</image:caption>

<image:caption>36” x 24” Winner of best art piece in the "art with recylced cigarette butts" category The artist recreates Magritte’s famous painting "Ceci nest pas une pipe" and builds upon his point that you are not looking at a pipe but rather at a drawing of a pipe, to make the case that you are not looking at a thread (fil) but at discarded cigarette butts threaded together. This metaphor is used to challenge ourselves not to focus only on the problem of tobacco use but also on its causes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Smoke Out Gallery - "Is your time up?" by Renne Sanders</image:title>
<image:caption>27'' x25'' Price: $300 I made this painting hoping that when some one who smokes looks at my painting they will have second thoughts. Is my time running out??? Do I want my body to dissolve into cancer, into death?? The cigarette buds I used are my daughters, this painting has become very personal to me. My collage piece is called “Is your time up.” I used a full sheet of 140 # paper. I used two pieces of altered tissue paper. I used 7 pieces of citrus-sol altered from a national geographic magazine. My husband and I went to Barbados and I took some pictures of some cigarettes while I was visiting. I took them so I could show them to my daughter who smokes. I printed out the cigarette on matt paper. I used old cigarette buds to place on my painting, to give it an authentic look. My husband reminded me I wanted to use collage words. “Is your time running out?” I used cut out letters from magazines and a picture I took. I looked at it and didn’t feel right. I went to bed tossed and turned and thought about what I could do to fix the painting. I woke up at 2:45 am (which I never do) to put a thin layer of gesso on it, and more altered tissue paper on my painting. My final thought was to put a gloss finished varnish on top of the painting. I framed and matted it. The unique design in this collage is the altered geographic magazines and the warning sign pictures from Barbados.</image:caption>

It speaks to the viewer who has consumed several cigarettes for a few minutes of pleasure and leaves nothing but contamination behind. "Just Quit" sends a message to smokers to take conscience of their vice and make the decision to quit the habit point blanc. <image:title>Smoke Out Gallery - "Temptation, Guilt, Regret" by Jennifer Dipper</image:title>
<image:caption>Price $350 Twenty years ago someone of whom I considered my friend introduced me to my first cigarette. Despite all the warnings and campaigns I had seen against smoking, I lit that cigarette and I puffed my first of many hundreds of thousand of puffs. Had I had known that that 1st cigarette would lead to 20 years of habitual smoking, I certainly would never have entertained the notion of even trying one. But I did. I smoked for 10 straight years until I became pregnant with my first child. Because of my pregnancy, I was able to quit for 9 months. After all, I had a purpose, a baby. Once my baby girl was born, I lit my 1st cigarette of 9 months. Of course, the biggest question in my head was, “Why?” Why now?… When I was already Smoke Free! I had no answer, just lack of control and shame. Therefore for 5 more years I smoked and smoked my filthy habit and I carried the scent to match. At the end of those five years, I became pregnant with my 2nd child, my son. So, to keep in tune with my personal tradition, I quit for my son’s sake for 9 more months. And as soon as he was born, I lit another cigarette… and another… and another. I continued to smoke until one day, I tried to take a breath and to my surprise and fear, I felt myself struggle. I tried to take more breaths and struggled to take complete breaths of oxygen. I prayed and promised that if I got though this spell alive, I’d never smoke another cigarette. After all, I want to live. The next day, I woke up fresh. I could breath! I celebrated with a cigarette. Internally, in my head, I felt guilty, angry, stupid and weak. But that did not stop me from smoking. I was up to a pack a day and the sound my coughs were regular and a consistent sound in my home. A month later, it happened again. I tried to take a breath and I struggled. I panicked and struggled some more. I prayed and promised that if I got through this shortness of breath; this loss of capacity in my lungs, I would surely quit my filthy habit of now 19 years. After all it is my life. ! The next day I woke up and took a deep breath. I could still breath! Yes! So I waiting until the afternoon until I could not wait any longer. I lit my cigarette to celebrate. After all it’s the only thing I had control of. I had tried everything to stop. Vapes, patches, gum, pregnancy. My mind wanting to quit so bad, but my body wouldn’t allow it. I knew I didn’t want to smoke anymore. I just needed to get over the first few weeks of temptation and withdrawn. As a photographer, I created this image, Temptation, Guilt, Regret. These are cigarette butts I have actually smoked. I not only felt like a failure, I was also a hypocrite. Here I was, smoking a pack of ciggies a day and making an Anti-Smoking campaign! Ridiculous, right? Then one day, the most wonderful thing happened. I got the flu. Not just your average flu, but the mutant mother of all flus. The lay in your bed, to sick to eat and drink, rock back and forth , cry or die, can’t even smoke a cigarette kind of flu. “Yes”, I thought to myself, “This is my ticket out!” I had two excruciating weeks to remind myself of my life long desire to stop smoking. This was my window of opportunity where I’d have no need to ween off with gum, or patches, or vape. I am so happy to say, “It worked!” It’s been five months since the flu saved my life. My prayers were answered and although I still crave a cigarette from time to time, I go back and replay those 2o years and the shortness of breaths and feelings of low self worth I would instill in myself. My body and mind are now in sync, and my lungs are gaining more and more capacity than before and enjoying life without the addictions of cigarettes and the outcome of regret.</image:caption>
